The Core Values of FIRST are Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, and Fun. The Core Values judge will mostly determine how well a team exemplifies the FIRST core values while watching them during the Innovation Project and Robot Design judging, but may ask a few questions during the Core Values Reflection portion of the judging session. Teams should also know what Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition are and how they exemplify them. Teams are judged on how well they exemplify all of the core values.

Rubrics

Judges will evaluate each core value on the following scale (taken from the FIRST Core Values Rubrics)[1]:

  • BEGINNING - Minimal examples observed across the team.
  • DEVELOPING - Some examples observed across the team.
  • ACCOMPLISHED - Multiple examples observed across the team.
  • EXCEEDS - Many examples observed across the team.

Possible Judge Questions

  • Give me an example of how you exemplified [insert core value here] outside of FLL.
  • What do the FIRST core values mean to you?

Tips

  • Every team member should know what Gracious Professionalism means to them.
  • Every team member should know the definition of Coopertition.
  • Prepare concrete examples of how team members exemplify the different core values, especially outside of FLL. Judges want to see how FIRST has affected their lives outside of FLL.
  • Keep in mind that every question during the Core Values Reflection somehow relates back to a core value. Try to recognize that and tie answers back to a concrete examples.
  • Tell stories. Judges love to hear anecdotes, especially ones that show examples of core values.
