The REV UltraPlanetary Motor is an FTC legal motor sold by REV Robotics. It is popular among FIRST Tech Challenge teams because it is easily configurable between different gearings. The motor is able to be used for any subsystem a team wants because of its unique ability to change gearings.

How it Works

When teams buy the UltraPlanetary Motor kit from REV it will come with a 5:1, 4:1, and 3:1 gearbox. If teams need more gearbox cartridges they can be purchased from the REV website. These gearbox cartridges can be easily screwed onto the base HD Hex motor included in the kit. Each cartridge will lower the gear ratio and increase the torque to strengthen the motor. This allows for teams to customize their motors to use just the right amount of torque for the job.

Pros Cons
Can be quickly modified to change the gear ratio Only a small part of the axle is supported
Has many different uses May be hard at first to modify the gearbox

How to Assemble the Motor

When assembling, make sure that the gearboxes are put together in descending gear ratios with the highest gear ratio being closest to the motor (ie: 5:1, then 4:1, then 3:1).

To assemble the motor and gearbox cartridges:

  1. First install the Mounting Plate using the supplied button head screws.
  2. Then start installing the chosen cartridges onto the motor.
  3. Afterwards, install the Output Cartridge. The Output Cartridge allows the motor to connect to an axle.
  4. Once the Output Cartridge has been installed, screw the motor and cartridges together using M3 screws The length of the M3 screws will vary depending on how many cartridges are on the motor. For just the Output Cartridge use an M3 x 10mm screw, but for every cartridge past that adds 10mm to the screw length. So one cartridge would be 20mm, and two cartridges in 30mm.
  5. After it has been fully constructed, put a 5mm hex axle into the Output Cartridge and then secure it using the provided set screw.
